3 Point Hitch Will Not Stay Up

One relatively common problem is a 3 point hitch that will not stay up or leaks down while in use. This is usually caused by one of three problems assuming that there are no external hydraulic leaks.

Is the lever staying where you put it? Sometimes the friction on the lever will get loose or damaged and allow the lever to physically vibrate down as you are using the tractor. This can usually be fixed by tightening the pivot area or tightening a friction bolt depending on the model.

Hydraulic Problem: If this does not fix the problem then you are likely dealing with a hydraulic problem. Most models have a 3pt lock valve under the seat - right between the operator's legs. If you raise the three point, close that valve, shut off the tractor, and wait- the results of this test will divide your potential problems into two categories since closing the valve eliminates the valve.

If the three point still slowly lowers then you are likely dealing with a lift piston o-ring that has failed or is damaged or worn.

If the three point stays up until you open that valve and then it starts to lower then you are likely dealing with a control valve problem. The control valve might need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Keep in mind that some lowering is normal. If the three point lowers over a period of an hour or so then it is probably not worth worrying about.
