Frequently Asked Questions

My New Fuel Filter Is Too Long.

Sometimes the metal top from your old filter can come unglued from the old filter and can still be stuck up in the filter valve. We see that quite a lot.

Take a look at your old filter and see if it has a metal cap on both ends. If not, you will need to pull the top of your old filter out of the valve and you should be back in business.

We recommend sticking the new filter up onto the barb in the fuel filter valve and then sliding the bowl up over the filter (instead of sitting the filter in the bowl and sliding buth up at the same time). This helps make sure that the filter gets correctly onto the barb.

Then just quickly run through the fuel filter bleeding instructions. and you should be back working again.

If that is not the problem then it could also be that a previous owner or importer has installed a smaller bowl and filter onto the tractor. We also see that alot. If that is the case then buying the correct size bowl will get you going again.

If neither of those help then please let me know and we will figure out what is going on.
Do I use The Clutch With The PowerShift?

Yes you can shift a powershift without using the clutch but it will be very abrupt. You will only want to shift at a very low RPM and make sure to never change directions without coming to a complete stop first. I, personally, recommend using the clutch to get going from a stop and then only shift without the clutch is you are at a very low RPM. We have a pretty good article on the PowerShift Transmission if you want to find out more about it.

Why Oil Suddenly Leaking From PTO & Axles?

That is actually a very common problem and it almost always caused by a bug building a nest in your breather tube. The breather tube is the small curved hook looking pipe right behind the seat. You can unscrew the tube and clean it out with a small wire.

As the transmission warms during normal operation or even just from sunshine warming them in the afternoon, the gasses inside the housing start to expand. If the transmission area can not vent out the expanding gasses then it builds up pressure and forces the oil out of the seals and, especially, the shifter boots. .
How Did I get Water In Hydraulic Oil?

About the only way water can get into your transmission or hydraulic oil is through a contaminated source (using a jug that had water in it) or through a leaking shifter boot. In fact, Yanmar put out a bullitin advising owners of some models to leave the gear shift in neutral because the boots might not seal completely when left in some gears do to the boots not being flexible enough.

How Much Horsepower Does My Yanmar Tractor Have?

The first two digits of the 4 digit Yanmar tractor models are going to be the PTO horsepower. You can multiply that by about 1.2 to get the rough engine horsepower.

For example a YM2000 is appx 20 horsepower at the PTO and about 24 horsepower at the engine (20 x 1.2 = 24). This is far from an exact science though and the higher the horsepower numbers get the more that figure varies.

The first two digits of the 3 digit model numbers is typically the engine horsepower. 3 digit model Yanmars were typically the models manufactured for sale in the USA. 4 digit models were manufactured for sale outside the USA.
Does Yanmar Make A Gasoline Tractor?

All of Yanmars tractors are diesel. I'm not really sure why they used the "D" for 4wd models but it has been a source of confusion for a long time.

What Is The Mystery Pedal By Right Heel?

That is going to be your differential lock pedal. It is designed to lock your rear wheels together to give you extra traction. Yanmar tractors (as well as pretty much every other tractor) use an open differential that really only puts power to the rear tire that spins the easiest.

If you jacked up one rear tire and put the tractor in gear- only that tire that was in the air would spin (don't try this or you might run over yourself). The same happens if one tire was stuck in a mud puddle, for example. In order to get better traction, you depress that pedal and both rear wheels will be forced to spin together and give you better traction.

So why don't tractors always have the rear wheels locked? When the rear wheels are locked the tractor gets extremely hard to turn and will tear up the ground when you do. Trying to turn on a surfacce like asphalt will put enormous stress on the drive components and can cause damage as well as excessive tire wear.

Be sure to NEVER engage the differential lock when the wheels are spinning. Always let the wheels come to a complete stop and then engage. If you engage the differential lock when one tire is spinning, it can create a huge shock load on the internal drive components and something will break. This is usually the brake pinion shaft in the Yanmar YM series tractors and the rear ring gear in the Yanmar 'F' series tractors.
What Size Brush Mower Do I need?

The general rule of thumb is to allow 4 horsepower for every one foot of implement. Your Yanmar YM2000 has 24 engine horsepower and 20PTO horsepower. A good size mower based on that horsepower would be 5 foot (5 foot x 4hp= 20hp required).

One big consideration is the weight of the mower and, even more importantly, how far that weight is positioned from the pivot point of the lift arms. Grooming mowers (AKA finishing mowers) have several smaller blades arranged in a row and are generally a shorter distance from the rear of the tractor. Brush mowers, however, typically have one big blade so they are usually extending much further back. That weight being a greater distance from the pivot point creates a much monger lever and can cause the tractor to do a 'wheelie'.

That answer got kind of long winded but the short answer: A light duty 5' brush mower is usually the correct size mower for that tractor. :)
What Size Battery Do I need?

Typically a Group 24 battery is what is used in most of the Yanmar YM series and F series tractors but the best way to get the correct battery for your tractor is to just take the old battery in to the parts store with you. They will be able to match it up there. You will have to take your old battery in anyway for a core so this is the easiest way to be sure you get the correct size & terminal type.

If you dont have a battery then the best method is to just measure the size of the battery tray and match up a battery that way.

Getting a battery with a higher CCA will not hurt anything. Getting a battery with a very low CCA will make the tractor hard to start. Typically any car sized battery will be more than enough to start your tractor. The only time you might get into trouble is if you get one of the smaller 'garden tractor' or ATV size batteries. They might not have enough 'oomph' to start your tractor - especially in the cold.
How Long Should I Energize The Glow Plug (Thermo-Start)?

You should energize the thermostart plug for about 10-15 seconds and then try to start the engine. Hold for much longer than that can burn out the glow plug or cause it to fail prematurely.

What Is My Favorite Yanmar?

The 2210D without a doubt. It combines the indestructable 2 cylinder Yanmar with the indestructable powershift transmission. The axles and all of the internal components of that tractor are overbuilt for the horsepower which makes them very hard to damage. It is dead simple to work on and the electrical system is about as simple as it gets.
