Yanmar Transmission Pops Out Of Gear
If your tractor frequently pops out of gear when you are using it then you are not alone. This is a very common question that we get here.
So what causes the problem? It is usually from two possible causes or a combination of the two. It can be that the gear's teeth are getting rounded due to "grinding the gears" or it can be due to slop in the linkage or from the shifter simply not engaging the gears fully.
So what can you do?
If the cause is found to be rounded gears then there is not much that you can really do except for replace the gears. We have seen people weld the edge of the gears back up and grind them back square but I can not comment on how long term of a solution that will be.
If the linkage is just loose then you can just repair or replace the worn down pieces. Often times this is just a pivot pin or shifter slide.
Occasionally we have seen cases where so much force was used to try to shift a tractor into gear that the actual shifter fork got bent. If that is the case you can try to straighten the fork or you may need to replace it.
