Carefully clean off your old gasket and any remaining residue with a razor and brush. Do not scratch mating surfaces. Apply a THIN FILM of silicone to the head and the back plate. You do NOT want a bead of silicone. Just a very thin film. If silicone oozes out when you tightened the bolts then it was too much.
